The Music Room at University Park - Wednesday, August 20, 2008

The music classroom at UP serves all children in the school. Kindergarten classes attend music twice a week for 20 minutes each visit and first through fourth grade attend two times a week for 30 minutes each visit. The music room is equipped with piano, electric piano, guitar, a wide assortment of unpitched percussion instruments and Orff instruments.

A variety of activities, methods and teaching processes are used during music class including the Kodaly method and the Orff-Schulwerk process. This allows students to work on singing skills, rhythm, improvisation, movement and instrument playing.

Special activities throughout the year include folk dance performances by all grades at the UP International Days, patriotic performance honoring veterans by 4th grade choir, the third grade musical, fourth grade family hoedown and the fourth grade trip to the Morton Meyerson Symphony Center for a concert by the Dallas Symphony. Additional performance opportunites for fourth grade students include after-school groups such as square dancing.
