Checkout Policy

FAMILY USE
Parents are welcome to get a family card. While we are happy to have our UP families use our library, younger siblings must be accompanied by a parent. We also ask that families limit their use of the library during the school day.

BOOK LIMIT
Parents may checkout up to 6 books at a time.

AFTER SCHOOL USE
UP students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in the LMC after school.
For safety reasons, we cannot allow students in grades K – 2 to wait for an older sibling until 3:30 by themselves. They must be with an adult.

Book Care

FIND A SAFE PLACE TO KEEP YOUR BOOKS
Students are encouraged to find a safe place to keep their books at home, so that pets or younger brothers and sisters cannot cause unintentional damage. (crayon markings, chewing, tearing pages, etc.)

KEEP BOOKS DRY
Water can destroy books. A wet book will usually mildew requiring that it be discarded. Children are asked to protect their books on rainy days by carrying them in a backpack. They are further asked not to eat or drink while reading their books.

PROTECT THE PAGES OF THE BOOK
When children have been eating or playing outside, they are asked to wash hands before reading their book. They are also asked to turn the page from the corner to avoid wrinkling and tearing. Don’t forget to use a bookmark!

RETURN BOOKS ON TIME
Please help your child experience responsibility by giving friendly reminders about this, but making it their job to pack up the library books. Lost books are $18.00.

KINDERGARTEN
Students come to the library twice a week and checkout books on their second visit of the week. Students that do not have their books turned in by their checkout time will not be allowed to checkout another book. Kindergarten students checkout 1 book for 1 week.

1ST & 2ND GRADE STUDENTS
Students come to the library twice a week with their class. They usually checkout books during their second library visit. They may checkout 2 books for 1 week. If students return only 1 of the 2 books, they may not checkout another book if the 1 left at home is overdue.

3RD & 4TH GRADE STUDENTS
Students come to the library twice a week with their class. They usually checkout books during their second library visit. They may checkout 2 books for 2 weeks. If students return only 1 of the 2 books, they may not checkout another book if the 1 left at home is overdue.

TEXAS BLUEBONNET AWARD
The Texas Bluebonnet Award list is designed to encourage Texas children in grades 3 through 6 to read more books, to explore a variety of current books, and to identify their favorite books through the voting process. The list is not designed for all students to read all of the books. In order to vote, students must read or listen to 5 books from the list and then complete a bluebonnet form for each of the 5 books. Students can pick up forms in the UP Media Center.  All votes in the state of Texas are combined, and the author of the winning book receives the Texas Bluebonnet Award in March at the Texas Library Association convention. The 2005-2006 winning book was Seadogs by Lisa Wheeler. Who will win this year?
